3 Simple Questions to Weed Out the Fboys on Your Next Date

If you’ve ever been on a date, there’s a 99.9% chance you’ve asked a question. If you were feeling wild, maybe even two or three. 

Questions are, of course, a key part of dating.

Although some women report particularly bad dates where the person across from them essentially performed a monologue and seemed uninterested in getting to know them, most of the time, questions are exchanged. Even online viral dating shows like “Pop the Balloon” demonstrate the significant role of question-asking.

But what type of questions are you asking? And why does it matter?

In this article, I’ll break down the different types of questions asked on dates. Then, I’ll uncover three “strategic” questions (as in, intentional and revealing questions, not manipulative or interrogative questions) you can ask to start prying beneath the surface.

These questions will help you gauge whether the person sitting across from you is genuinely engaged/open/willing/interested in sharing themselves with you, and ultimately, weed out the sneaky FBoys who typically know “the right things to say.”

But First: What Type of Questions Are You Asking?

There are basic questions that establish a lighthearted foundation:

• What do you do for a living?
• Where are you from originally?
• Have any siblings/pets/hobbies?
• Favorite travel destination?
• Favorite type of food?

“Basic” doesn’t mean that they’re bad questions… they’re like the “warm-up stretch” of conversation and completely necessary. However, they rarely reveal someone’s true character or emotional availability.

Then, there are story-based questions: the kind that invite the other person to share an experience, opinion, or reflection:

• What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened to you this year?

• If you could relive one day, what would it be?

• What’s something you’re proud of but never talk about?

Story-based questions work better than basic questions for giving you a glimpse into how someone sees the world.

Finally, there are strategic questions (my personal fave). These are the subtle, revealing ones that give you more insight than a résumé of their life could.

They create opportunities for honesty, vulnerability, and perspective-sharing without feeling like an interrogation.

Three Strategic Questions to Use on Your Next Date

1. “What’s something that’s important to you that most people don’t notice about you right away?”

• Why it works: I love this as a lighthearted yet thoughtful question. Due to its open-ended yet unique angle, it can truly be a jackpot for uncovering all sorts of values, quirks, and priorities. It shows you what they wish people understood about them, and whether it aligns with what you’re looking for.It may also open the door for follow-up questions that could provide insight into their relationships with friends and family.

2. “What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself from past relationships?”

• Why it works: This tells you whether they’re capable of self-reflection and accountability. Firstly, an emotionally mature and available person will welcome the introspective nature of the question (and won’t run away at the word “relationship” being spoken). They’ll also focus on their own past setbacks, blind spots, and ultimate growth rather than only pointing fingers at exes and playing the blame game.If you get a five-minute rant about “crazy” former partners with zero self-awareness… huuuuuuuge red flag.

3. “Have you ever changed your mind about something that once really mattered to you?”

• Why it works: Life throws us all sorts of unexpected moments and experiences that can shift our perspective, and this question can give you a window into how flexible and open someone is to growth and change. People who can honestly reflect on their beliefs and evolve over time tend to be more emotionally available and ready for deeper connection.

  In contrast, FBoys and emotionally unavailable types usually stick to rigid patterns, avoid real personal transformation, and/or don’t really want to talk to you about it.

How to Use These Questions Without “Killing the Vibe”

I personally don’t think anyone needs to overthink when the “best” time is to ask any particular question. It’s really all about what feels natural and flows with the conversation.

And overthinking certain “rules,” such as when the best time to ask about certain topics and issues, may actually end up killing the vibe faster. That type of energy feels forced, disconnected, or like you’re running down a mental checklist instead of genuinely getting to know someone.

Essentially, dates work best when the curiosity is real and the conversation unfolds in a way that feels alive, not rehearsed.

So there’s no need to sit down and pull out a metaphorical clipboard. Start with casual topics you’re genuinely interested in, let the conversation breathe, and when there’s a pause or simply a moment that feels right, drop one of these gems in.

BIG NOTE: Also, more importantly than when you ask deeper questions is what comes next: listen for the way they answer.

Do they expand and engage, or do they shut down and give the bare minimum or a stock answer?

Do they ask you the same or a similar question in return?

Sometimes, how someone responds tells you more than the words themselves.

What This Really Does for You

Strategic questions aren’t about catching someone off-guard, tricking someone into oversharing, or cornering them into saying what you want to hear.

They’re about inviting them to show you who they are.

When you date this way, you can have fun collecting cute and funny stories, sure! But you’ll also be collecting evidence of compatibility.

Because the right partner will want to go deeper with you. And the wrong one? They’ll reveal themselves just as quickly, thus saving you weeks (or months… or years…) of wasted time.
