The 20 Best Dating Questions from Netflix’s Sneaky Links (and How to Use Them in Real Life)

If you’ve been watching Netflix’s Sneaky Links: Dating After Dark, you know this isn’t your average dating show. Yes, it’s sexy, dramatic, and full of… interesting (read: eye-rolling) moments. But under all the juicy TV drama, there’s something surprisingly insightful going on (at least for TV): real questions that spark meaningful conversations.

The show, hosted by Chloe Veitch and guided by relationship expert Spicy Mari, brings together singles and their former “sneaky links” (aka casual hookups) to explore whether casual connections can evolve into meaningful relationships. Each of the”motel guests” faces challenges that force them to be honest about their past, present, and potential future.

And what stood out to me were the insightful questions the contestants asked each other, either through the challenges or on their own. Some of these questions actually cut through the noise and got to the heart of compatibility, values, and intentions – better than what you usually hear on reality TV (looking at you, Love Island…). And, of course, better than some of the worst questions from the show that I ranked as well.

So, here are 20 of the best questions from the show, including why they’re good, what they reveal, and how to use them in your own dating life.

1. “What are some of the most important qualities you look for in a long-term partner?”

Who asked it: Brandon Limeres to Jacie Allain (provided by Spicy Mari through a challenge)

Why it works: This question helps transition away from small talk and explores core values and relationship readiness. It shows you whether someone is even thinking long-term and what they prioritize: kindness, ambition, communication, faithfulness, or else?

What it reveals: If someone gives a shallow answer (“she gotta look good”), that tells you a lot. If their answer reflects thoughtfulness, it means they’re likely emotionally mature and ready to build something meaningful.

How to use it: You can ask this on a first or second date without “sounding too intense.” Frame it as curiosity: “Just wondering, what are some qualities that are really important to you in a partner?”

2.“What is your biggest fear?”

Who asked it: Travis Arenas to Zoé Martin

Why it works: Vulnerability builds connection, and this question opens the door for just that. You can learn what makes them tick and how self-aware they are.

What it reveals: Emotional depth. If someone brushes this off or makes a joke, they might struggle with emotional openness.

How to use it: Use this question when you have already hung out a few times and feel a bit of trust building. It can bring you closer and even make the date more memorable.

3. “What are you genuinely looking for right now?”

Why it works: It’s direct and leaves no room for guessing. You get clarity fast, which is key if you’re dating with intention.

What it reveals: Are they looking for a situationship or something real? This question helps you avoid wasting time with someone who’s emotionally unavailable or just seeing where things go.

How to use it: This one is great to ask early. Don’t be afraid to say something like, “I’m curious where your head’s at right now when it comes to dating.”

4. “Where in the world would you want to plant roots?”

Who asked it: Travis to Zoé (provided by Mari through a challenge)

Why it works: It’s a beautiful way to talk about lifestyle, values, and long-term vision without sounding like you’re planning the wedding.

What it reveals: Are they grounded or nomadic? Career-focused or family-first? This question also shows whether your lifestyles could align.

The follow-up from this question was Zoé mentioning that her dream is to live and Paris and then Travis asking, “How do you feel about your family and things like that? Do you feel like, you know, you’re ready to maybe sever that and, like, you’re just gonna chart your own path?” Sure, his wording may sound a bit harsh (“sever” the ties? Yikes), but the fact that he’s asking for clarity is a good sign: it shows that he wants to get a better understanding of how she sees her family ties instead of just making the worst assumption.

How to use it: Perfect for long-distance dating, travel lovers, remote workers, or anyone who isn’t geographically locked down. Use it to see if your futures even live in the same place—literally.

5. “What’s your number one love language?”

Who asked it: Colt Fason to Kelsey Tomlin

Why it works: Love languages aren’t just trendy; they’re legit tools to understand how someone gives and receives affection. And in a romantic setting (e.g., a first date… especially if you’re somehow equipped with a massage table set up like they were), it perfectly balances depth and flirtation.

What it reveals: A potential point of alignment. It’s not a big deal if you don’t have the same love languages, but it’s a nice discussion topic to explore each other’s personality and desires at an earlier stage. Also, if you’re a quality time person and they’re all about acts of service, knowing this early helps avoid mismatched expectations.

How to use it: You can ask it as is or even more playfully: “Have you ever taken the love languages quiz? I’m curious what yours is.”

6. “How are you feeling about us?”

Who asked it: Manny Garcia to Avery Wadbrook

Why it works: It’s straightforward without being pushy or sounding “desperate” (although the fear of sounding desperate is usually an indication of overthinking anyway, but I digress…). It creates a space for honesty and reflection.

What it reveals: Whether someone is emotionally tuned in or just going through the motions. This question is a temperature check that creates a space for honesty and reflection, or – on the other hand – apprehensive and deflection. Either way, the response will be revealing.

How to use it: You can use this when you’ve been on a few dates and want to know if you’re building something or stalling. It’s also a great way to show that you value communication while also curiously “checking in” without saying the dreaded “What are we?” or the self-focused “How do you feel about me?”

7. “How do you like to show your generosity?”

Who asked it: Nicole S. to Corinthian

Why it works: This is an unexpected question that gets people thinking about how they express care. It’s deeper than “Are you generous?” because it acknowledges or assumes that quality in the first place and then focuses on their style of conveying that quality.

What it reveals: Some people are financial givers. Others give time, attention, or emotional support. Their answer will tell you what giving looks like to them.

How to use it: If you don’t find yourself in a “painting someone’s soul” Sneaky Links reality TV challenge (for some reason…), just try this question out on a second or third date. It opens the door to conversations around giving and receiving without being too heavy or cliché.

8. “What’s a tradition you’d love to start for your future family?”

Who asked it: Jacie and Brandon (provided by Mari through a challenge)

Why it works: This is a super sweet way to talk about future hopes and potential value alignment without saying, while also tapping into a date’s sense of creativity, fun, celebration, expressions of gratitude, etc.

What it reveals: Are they family-oriented? Sentimental? Do they imagine a future with rituals and joy?

How to use it: This works especially well around the holidays or during deeper conversations. It also helps you visualize if your values align.

9. “What wakes you up in the morning?” (aka, what drives you?)

Who asked it: Nicole S. to Corinthian (followed up by Corinthian: What are goals or dreams that you aspire to?)

Why it works: Purpose is sexy, and this question taps into what motivates them beyond surface-level accomplishments.

What it reveals: You’ll learn what excites them, what they’re striving for, and if they have ambition, curiosity, or heart behind their actions.

How to use it: Great for early conversations that go deeper. You can always follow this up with “What inspired that?” or “Has that always been true for you?”

10. “What is your toxic trait?”

Who asked it: Mari to the group | Also Justin to Kelsey on their date

Why it works: Everyone has one, and asking this playfully is a great way to see how self-aware (and honest) someone is.

What it reveals: Can they own their flaws? Do they have a sense of humor about themselves? You want someone who can name their stuff, demonstrate reflection and accountability, and grow from it.

How to use it: Although toxicity is no joke, this question can be posed in a more lighthearted or even “flirty” way on the first few dates – perfect for over drinks or dinner.  Offer yours first to set the tone, then invite them to share. Some of the answers from the group included too much social media, repetitive drunk texting, inconsistent feelings, and self-sabotage.

11. “So is that something you’ve thought about before—adjusting your plans when you have a partner in your life?”

Who asked it: Travis to Zoé

Why it works: This question dives into a very real challenge in relationships: balancing autonomy with compromise. Relationships require a certain level of flexibility, and this gently gets at whether they’re open to reshaping parts of their life to accommodate a real partnership or if they’re stuck in solo mode. Ultimately, it opens the conversation about having a mindset for mutual planning and adaptability. It’s subtle but deeply telling.

What it reveals: Are they all about “my path, my way,” or are they open to creating a shared path with someone else? It assesses their willingness to integrate someone into their life. If they’ve never considered adjusting for a partner, that might signal a lack of readiness for a serious commitment or just a rigid life structure. If they have, you’re likely dealing with someone open to a real partnership.

How to Use It: Similar to when Travis positioned it with Zoe, ask this when you’re talking about travel, career, or life goals. Frame it as a curiosity: “Do you think your plans could shift if you were building something serious with someone?”

12. “Can I just ask you, like, what ultimately led you to be like, ‘Yeah, this isn’t right for me?’ What made you switch?”

Who asked it: Kelsey to Colt

Why it works: This is bold, vulnerable, and sometimes just plain necessary. It’s the kind of question that cuts through the noise when you’re trying to understand someone’s clarity and how they process emotional decisions. It’s especially powerful when you’ve been watching someone waffle (as Kelsey had been).

Though, context and tone really matter here. Kelsey wanted to assess his judgment, and determine whether he made a sound, thoughtful, and clear decision. His answer spelled out his step-by-step thought process, so it made her feel (at least a tiny bit) more comfortable. If he didn’t have a good answer to that, she might have left him, assuming that he wasn’t actually over Angelique.

What it reveals: Their decision-making process, their emotional honesty and insight, whether they take responsibility or simply pass blame, and whether they actually know what they want. You’ll also see how clearly they can articulate what doesn’t work for them in relationships. Are they decisive, or just float through situations until they fall apart?

How to Use It: Ask this when someone tells you a story about a past but recent relationship or serious dating decision. Be curious, not confrontational or judgmental. You could say something like: “I’m just curious… what made you know it wasn’t right for you?”

13. “What’s something you’ve learned?” (from being on the show)

Who asked it: Jacie to Brandon

Why it works: Short, simple, and wide open. But also deceptively deep, depending on the context. This can invite your date to reflect and share something meaningful and reveal whether they actually integrate their experiences into growth.

What it reveals: What kind of challenges they’ve faced and their ability to self-reflect on said challenges. Whether they see themselves as growing or stuck. It’s also a great way to learn their worldview – what they think is worth learning and the lessons that matter the most to them.

How to Use It: Obviously, you probably wouldn’t be asking someone in real life what they’ve learned from a reality show, but you could ask about lessons learned in many other different areas of life.

“What’s something you’ve learned from…” your past relationships, your most recent job, your most adventurous travel experience, a challenge you’ve recently faced, your family, etc.

It works anywhere from early coffee chats to deeper late-night convos – whenever a conversation turns reflective.

14. “Do you think guys and girls can just be friends?”

Who asked it: Spicy Mari to the group (during a challenge)

Why it works: It has the potential to highlight deeper beliefs about boundaries, trust, emotional maturity, and/or traditional values. It also opens the door to talk about friendship, jealousy, and respect in relationships.

What it reveals: It may sound light, but answers to this can be charged with assumptions, and how someone responds can say a lot about their sense of security and/or worldviews. More specifically, it could reveal whether they may be too possessive, jealous, traditional, open-minded, or else in a way that doesn’t align with you.

How to Use It: Throw it into a casual conversation or group setting. It works well early on when you want to test for values and emotional flexibility.

15. “How many kids do you want?”

Who asked it: Colt to Kelsey (during a challenge)

Why it works: It might seem intense for the first few dates, but if you’re dating for long-term compatibility, this direct, future-focused question matters. It’s a great question once you’ve established some mutual interest, especially if having a family is important to you.

What it reveals: Compatibility on one of life’s biggest topics and whether they’ve even thought about that part of their future. If someone gets cagey or avoidant, that’s telling. If they answer with clarity (even if it’s “not sure yet”), that shows honesty and intention.

How to Use It: Save this for when you’ve started having real conversations about the future and feel some alignment already. It can be framed in various ways: “Have you ever thought about whether you want kids someday? How many would you want?” “Do you see kids in your future?”  “Have you ever thought about how many kids you’d want someday?”

16. “Um, religious beliefs? Like, do you–? Are you a Christian, or do you believe…? How do you believe when it comes to…?” (a.k.a. Are you religious, and if so, what religion?)

Who asked it: Colt to Angelique Wilcox

Why it works: The delivery was truly clumsy, but the question itself is important. Not everyone gets it out gracefully since it can be a “sensitive” topic, but discussing religion or spirituality is a major piece of compatibility, especially if it deeply shapes your life.

What it reveals: Whether or not their beliefs and worldviews are aligned with yours, how open or private they are about their faith, and how comfortable they are having deeper conversations. It can also lead to conversations about whether some form of faith is important in the way they relate, love, and make decisions.

How to Use It: When the moment feels right, and you feel like you need to know the answer in order to authentically move forward in the relationship. I suggest as soon as possible if it’s something highly important to you.

There are many ways to frame it, depending on which aspect you’d like to know or emphasize: “Are you religious, and if so, what religion?” “Do you consider yourself spiritual or religious at all?” “Is faith something that plays a big role in your life? What does that look like?”

17.  Speed-Fire Round: “Favorite food, the longest relationship, and the least favorite quality in a partner.”

Who asked it: Zoé to Corinthian

Why it works: It’s flirty, light, and energy-matching—but still sneaks in some revealing info. This quickfire format keeps things moving while giving both people room to share honestly without overthinking.

What it reveals: Their vibe, relationship history, and what turns them off—all in a matter of seconds. It also shows how they react under playful pressure. Can they be silly and thoughtful?

How to Use It: This works great when you want to shift the mood, break the ice, add a playful energy to your date, or get some quick responses for early dating assessment. “Let’s do a speed round! I’ll go first…”

In the show, you might have noticed how, even for these little things, their energy didn’t match, so it’s not just about the answers but the dynamic that’s created when answering.

18. “Did he give you a lot of trouble growing up?”

Who asked it: Jacie to Alfredo (Brandon’s dad)

Why it works: This question is simultaneously charming, playful, and revealing. When meeting someone’s family, you want to be mindful of your manners, but you also want to still use it as an opportunity to understand your date. And this question invites storytelling, honesty, and a bit of loving roast.

What it reveals: More than you think: It’s light and charming, but it still offers a window into someone’s past.

It can provide insight into their childhood and character, how their family sees them, how they were raised, how close they really are with their family, etc. In Jacie’s case, this question prompted the dad to speak truthfully about how he sees Brandon and his concerns, which presumably made Jacie confirm some of the red flags she noticed as well. 

How to Use It: It’s great for when meeting a partner’s parents, perhaps just ask it with a smile and keep it casual if you want to frame it as a curious question rather than a drama-baiting one. And maybe build a bit of connection and rapport first (as in, don’t dish it out as the very first question).

19. “I’m excited to learn more about you. So, what are your interests?”

Who asked it: Manny to Avery

Why it works: “What are your interests?” is a solid question. It’s a bit boring and basic, but it’s a helpful icebreaker nonetheless. And it has all the right characteristics of a first date question: light, inviting, and open-ended. Plus, asking about interests shows you’re not just looking for surface-level small talk, but also for common ground and shared passions.

What it reveals: This question illuminates what lights them up, as well as whether they have hobbies, goals, or things they’re passionate about. You’ll also get a peek at their lifestyle, values, and how they spend their time.

How to Use It: Use this as-is before or during a first date, especially if you’ve met online. It’s a great question to spark connection and keep things casual but meaningful. Try: “I’d love to know—what kind of things are you into outside of work?” or just go with Manny’s version.

20. “Can you, like, genuinely say that in your heart and head, you don’t feel pulled one way or the other?”

Who asked it: Kelsey to Colt

Why it works: This one may be controversial, which is why it’s last on the list. But here’s the thing: instead of letting things stay vague and playing the guessing game, this vulnerable, bold question forces someone to take a stance and stop waffling.

It’s direct and emotionally loaded, which, to me, is perfect for cutting through love triangle b.s. And while love triangles might sound like just a reality TV thing, they definitely happen in real life, too.

This question doesn’t demand an immediate decision; it asks someone to check in with their own emotional truth. It’s bold, vulnerable, and signals that you value clarity (even if it’s uncomfortable).

Finally, it mentions a head-heart connection that I find crucial in love-life decision-making.

What it reveals: Emotional clarity (or lack of it). Are they being honest with themselves? With you? It forces reflection — and sometimes a hard truth. It’s a litmus test for honesty in emotionally foggy situations. If they pause or struggle to answer, that says a lot, too.

How to Use It: This question can come off as insecure or confrontational, depending on your tone. But when someone has been teetering between you and someone else, and you’re starting to hit your limit, this type of question (delivered with grounded confidence and genuine curiosity) sends a powerful message: “I know my worth, and I won’t wait in limbo.”

Even if the answer isn’t crystal clear right away, the question shifts the energy. You’re no longer just reacting and “letting things unfold”; you’re showing that you’re not afraid to ask the hard questions and that you won’t settle for being someone’s “maybe” forever and ever.

Afterward, Kelsey thoughtfully said: “I think I’m feeling confused because I would never, ever classify myself as somebody’s second option. But I think that if I were to pressure him into making a decision, regardless of which way he went, it wouldn’t be, like, truly what he wanted. I want him to make something that he’s confident in making and is gonna stick through.”

Thus, you’re not demanding a decision either – if they don’t decide, you can decide (to leave, of course).
